You could certainly buy a nice new car as long as it isn’t a super exotic automobile like a Ferrari, Lamborghini or something along those lines unless it was used. That said, you could definitely put yourself into a very nice ride and still have a nice amount of money left over.
You could certainly buy a house in most states. $250,000 would allow you to put a nice down payment on a house if you desired. What kind of house would you get?
One thing we know we’d do if we ever won a sweepstakes like this is go on a really nice vacation. Depending on the time of year we’d consider Hawaii, Europe or Caribbean islands for sure. Of course, we wouldn’t mind spending time in some of our favorite cities like Austin, Boston, Seattle, New York, San Diego, Chicago, Miami, Montreal, Vancouver and Portland (either Oregon or Maine work)!
I think many of us would choose to pay off or pay down some debt which is probably a very good use of the winnings. Most of us would love to be debt free and I think $250,000 would help most of us get on our way.
Another great idea would be to put it towards a college degree or training program. College is very expensive these days but $250,000 should be more than enough to put you through a state school program.
Of course one of the wisest things you can do is sit down with a financial advisor, an accountant, a lawyer or your banker (or all four) and figure out how to invest your money depending on your needs and goals. You’ll want to make sure to minimize your tax exposure on any gains and earn as much as possible within your risk tolerance level.
